Dogs with arthritis tend to not want to go for as long of a walk as they used to and may tire more easily. Stairs and jumping can often become more difficult for a dog with arthritis.

What causes arthritis in dogs?

Typically, arthritis arises from wear and tear on your dog’s joints throughout their life. It often occurs more commonly in dogs who are overweight or who suffered from orthopedic injuries earlier on in life. Some larger breed dogs are predisposed as well.

What are some treatment options for arthritis in dogs?

Medications that provide pain control and reduce inflammation are the main treatment option for arthritis. At Seneca Animal Clinic, we also use multi-modal management of arthritis by encouraging weight loss, physiotherapy exercises as well as supplements for joints including Glucosamine and Omega 3 Fatty Acids.

Can I give my dog aspirin?

Dogs don’t tolerate aspirin well and the dose is different than it is for humans. We do not recommend giving this to your dog.
